The building : Ground Floor
This
is where we start our undergradate learning. The building
is pretty large, the picture of which can be found
on the home page of this site. It houses most of the
departments that we have studied in. I'll take you
through a little tour. In the front there is a beatiful
garden which has a statue of Hippocrates. There is
a gardener maintaining the garden. In the front of
the building there are parking areas for the vehicles
of the students and the Medical College Buses. You'll
find a lot of gleaming bikes and buses parked here
on the working day.
There
are three main entrances into the building. The first
one (that's the one towards the left side of the front)
leads us to the Pharmacology department and the Biochemistry
Lecture Hall. By the side of the Biochemistry Lecture
hall, a stairway leads us to the Anatomy Department.
On the immediate left are the various rooms for the
Pharmacology Professors. If you go through the corridor
to the left, you'll reach the Biochemistry Department.
If you follow the corridor towards the left from the
Biochemistry department, you'll reach the Biochemistry
lab. You can get into the lab through the side entrance
to the building. On the right side of the lab, there
is a vacant plot which joins with the plot around
the audiotorium in the back of the building.
The
second entrance is in the middle. As you enter there
is the Union Room on the right side and Security room
on the left side. A litle more further in to the corridor
you see Pharmacology labs on either side of the main
entrance. Straight on from here you see a lounge in
front of the auditorium. That lounge holds some coffee
vending machines etc. This is the place where we have
lunch hang out during the afternoons. There is enough
space here for practicing the dance numbers for our
campus festivals. The auditorium us rather small compared
to the the C. O. Karunakaran hall. The stairway by
the side of lounge leads us to the Department of Social
and Preventive Medicine (or Community Medicine).
The
third main entrance is on the right of the building.
It takes us to the Physiology Lecture hall and Physiology
Departments. Like the Bicochem Dept., the corridor
takes you to the labs and there is a plot which connects
to the plot around the auditorium. The stairway here
takes you to the Department of Microbiology.
As
I've mentioned before, there are side entrances to
the building as well. The one on the left goes to
the Biochem Lab and the one on the right to the Physiology
lab. Staircases take you to Anatomy Dissection hall
and Biochemistry Lab respectively.
First
Floor
I'll
guide you through the first floor starting from the
left side. If you take the stairway by the side of
the Biochemistry Department, you'll reach the Anatomy
Department on the right (to the left if you viewing
from the front) and the Histology Lab on the left.
The Anatomy Lecture hall stands proud right behind
you as you enter the first floor. Towards right side
of the corridor you have two demonstration rooms for
Anatomy. Further right through the corridor takes
you to the dissection hall and the small discussion
halls nearby. By this time the stinking smell of the
hall might have reached you if there is some dissection
going on. On the left of the dissection hall is a
stairway through which you can get out of the building
through one of it's side entrances.
From
the stairway which you came up, if you take the corridor
to the left by the side of the Histology Lab, you'll
reach the SPM Dept. It's located in the middle of
the building. The space corresponding to the audiotorium
downstairs is taken up by the SPM lab and that of
the lounge is taken up by the SPM Dept. Staff rooms.
So if you take up the corridor by the front of Histology
Lab into the back part of the first floor you'll first
see as stairway leading up the Department of Forensic
Medicine. The whole department literally is in a different
level. The most confusing part with the department
is when someone comes up for emeregeny toxicological
assessment during the night. The PG student who is
supposed to examine will be inside the PG Hostel by
the side of the library/office complex. So that's
where you go to submit samples for toxicological anaylysis.
Immediately after the stairway is the staff rooms
and the SPM Lab which I mentioned before.
Now
even further through the main corridor past the SPM
Department you reach the place where the stairway
leading from the Physiology department joins. There
lies the SPM Lecture hall which will be located on
top of the Physiology Lecture Hall. Further through
the corridor you reach the Forensic Medicine Museum
(corresponding to the Anatomy Museum/Demonstration
hall) on the other side. Immediately after this is
the Microbiology Department. To the left through the
corner, you'll head straight into the Microbiology
Department. This is the place where you give Microbiology
samples for cutlure and sensitivity etc. There is
also a separate lab which runs HIV - ELISA tests.
The
Pathology Block
This
is a separate block on the right side of the main
building. If you are inside the main building, you
can reach there by going to the exit by the side of
the Pysiology Lab. The Pathology block itself is in
three floors. It's located in terrain which is lower
as compared to main building. So, you are entering
the top floor of the building as you enter by side
of the main building.
Into
the corridor, to the left is the erstwhile Girl's
Common room. On the right side of the corridor are
the various staff rooms for the Pathology Department
staff. If you take the stair down, on the right side
is the erstwhile Men's Common room. By the side of
this is the AID - Research Cell. This is the place
where we hang out and play games when we get free
time. On the lef is the main pathology lab. Another
floor down is the Clinical Pathology Section. Here,
the specimens from all over the hospital complex are
collected and studied for Histo Pathological Reports.
The
actual entrance to this block is through the curving
way by the side of the college ground towards the
Priyadarshani Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences.
That's the way you have to go to give Histo Pathological
samples as well as collect the HPRs (reports).
The
Canteen, Co-Operative Society Building & the New
Common Rooms
This
is located by the side of the Central Libary. If you
get out through the side exit from the Biochemistry
lab, you'll find the parking lot for the staff. By
the side of it, there is a small stairway which leads
you to the way to the Canteen. You can also get into
the way by taking the right turn off the road leading
to the Central Libray / Office Complex. Immediately
on the right side is the newly constructed Common
Room (mixed) for the undergraduates. Further on, to
the right is the Co-operative society bulding and
a small store where you get to buy some stationery
items and candies etc. A little further on is the
canteen which is a very shabby building. Recently,
the food to has become really not good to eat.
