Protest over male ECG Technicians :
(31/01/03)
There
has been protests in General Hospital about Male ECG
Techinicans taking the ECG of female patients. Yesterday,
a young woman protested publicly against such an incident
and demanded the authorities to provide female ECG technicians
to take ECGs of female patients. Apparently, female
ECG technicians are deputed for taking the ECGs of female
patients in other government hospitals. (Courtesy

SAT Hospital : Public Dormitory (22/01/03)
The
story appeared on the papers two days back. It's about
the lack of progression of the work on the dormitory
planned a few years back at the S. A. T. hospital. Once
constructed, it would shelter about 70 bystanders comfortably.
I think it should be given priority as the conditions
being offered at present to the bystanders of the mothers
in Labour are pathetic.

: (22/01/03)
The
first ever key-hole surgery in performed by a team of
Otolaryngologists and Neurosurgeons at Medical College
Hospital, Trivandrum on the 20th of January. The team
was led by Dr. N. Viswanathan (E. N. T.) and Dr. Devadas
(Neurosurgery) removed a pituitary tumor with the help
of 'physio' endoscopes. It is slated to be a success
and will hopefully lay the path for more advanced surgical
techniques being used in our hospital.
Self Financing Medical Colleges : 75% seats
via Management (21/01/03)
The
High Court issued a statement directing the Self Financing
Medical Colleges (as well as other Self Financing professional
institutions) to allot 75% of it's seats to the Management
quota. Only the rest (25%) will be alloted via merit.
This was an order overruling a directive issued by the
Government earlier to allot 50% seats through merit.
The court also declared that the explanation given by
the Government about the expenses of teaching a medical
student at a Government Medical College being 1 and
a half lakh as 'unclear'.
Hostel Problems Resurface : (13/01/03)
According
to the report in today's Malayala Manorama, there is
a huge rift between demand and capacity at the Ladies
Hostel for the First M. B. B. S. students. The student
have filed against the authorities for the lack of even
bare minimum facilities. The recently opened dormitory
near the Ladies' Hostel is already working at above
200% it's alloted capacity. The dormitory was built
so as to allow provision for opening more wards at the
hospital complex. This academic year, the percentage
of girl student was more than during previous years.
The authorities have agreed to reallocate the students
to the main Hostel buildings as soon as possible.
New
Casualty Block Starts Functioning : (05/01/03)
The
new casualty block started functioning at 9.15 am on
Monday. Let's just hope that our standards of trauma
care get a huge uplift with this. I am a bit sceptical
about the fact that three of the operating tables in
the block are to be donated to the Kidney Transplantation
unit in our hospital. I guess getting the transplantation
unit to get back working is very important. But, does
that mean compromising three very important tables at
the Casualty?
