my dear 96 batch,
This
mail of mine is meant to tell you the options at Karakonam.
Dr.Somervell
Memorial CSI Medical College is a new medical college
started from the 2002-2003 batch MBBS course, affiliated
to the Kerala University.
Method
of selection to MBBS course -- 50% of the seats are
reserved for the Management quota, and the rest 50%
for the state quota from the Kerala Pre Medical entrance
(1.5 lakhs per annum). ( This is subject to change
from time to time)
The
departments there --- It has all facilities for all
usual clinical departments like O&G, Paediatrics
, Ophthalmology (best), and others like Medicine,
Surgery, Ortho, Skin, ENT, Psychiatry, Radiology,
Physical Medicine, Dental, Ayurveda etc. The non-clinical
departments like Anatomy, Physiology, Biochem are
well functional; while Pharmac, Patho, SPM, Forensic
etc are under construction. The number of patients
is much less than that in TVM Med College, but however,
we hope that it will pick up in future.
Other
courses here are B.Sc (Nursing), Gen.Nursing now.
B.Sc (MLT) and some other paramedical courses is expected
to start next year.
Regarding
the junior doctors there ---In the clinical departments,
junior doctors are posted as tutors in Medicine, Surgery,
O&G, Paediatrics etc, (the other departments may
take them later on) with a pay of Rs.9000/-. In the
nonclinical departments, they are posted in Anatomy,
Biochem, Physio (the other departments later) with
a pay of Rs.8000/-. The first one year is a probation,
and the next year onwards, you are made permanent
with increment also.
The
senior doctors (with PG) are also appointed there
with salary over Rs.20,000/-(as per their experience).
There
is facilities for stay for all the staff in the premises
(single or quarters).
There
is a well furnished library with all sufficient books
to read.
For
the junior doctors who work for more than two years
will be given sponsorship for doing their PG in CMC,Vellore.
However, this is no guarentee for a seat in CMC, as
you have to come up in the exam competent enough.
(This provision is subject to change).
Regarding
my personal experince here, it is really a nice experience
to teach, conduct exams, orals etc, to work with our
own Madams, and also the beautiful scenery here. There
is enough time to study also.

my dear batchmates. We have at present Drs.Aneesh,
Asha, Briji, Lekshmi, Sreekanth and myself here. Asha
SV and Swayam are also waiting to be invited here
after the interview. All are welcome here, to (at
least)visit or to work here (now or after your PG).
