Berlin architect to rebuild WTC site : (28/02/03)

A complex of angular towers and a spire that would be among the world's tallest structures has been officially selected as the design for the World Trade Center site in New York. Berlin-based architect Daniel Libeskind's project is centred around the excavated pit of the former World Trade Center. It beat the other finalist team, led by New York-based architects Rafael Vinoly and Frederic Schwartz, which proposed two decorative steel towers in memory of the twin towers destroyed in the 11 September 2001 hijacked plane attacks. The architect says that having calculated the arc of the sun, a wedge of natural light would funnel visitors to the memorial site, and that every September 11 between 8:46 a.m., when the first tower was struck by a plane, and 10:28 a.m., when the second tower collapsed, no shadows will be cast by his buildings. Norah Jones wins five Grammys : (27/02/03)

Norah Jones was the big winner at the 45th Annual Grammy Awards, personally taking five awards in her first-ever Grammy appearance, including the coveted album of the year award for Come Away With Me, while her album earned three additional trophies. "I feel really blessed and really lucky," said Jones after winning for album of the year. The 23-year-old daughter of internationally renowned sitar player Ravi Shankar also received honors for pop vocal album, best new artist, and record of the year and female pop vocal performance for "Don't Know Why." Jones won every category in which she was nominated, tying Lauryn Hill (who did it at age 23 in 1999) and Alicia Keys (who did it at age 21 in 2002) for the most wins by a female artist in a single night. In addition, Jones's Come Away With Me proved a success for many of those involved in its creation. Jesse Harris won the song of the year award for penning Jones's "Don't Know Why," while Come Away With Me was named best engineered non-classical album, and it won the producer of the year honor for Arif Mardin. Surprise crackdown on software piracy : (03/02/03)

In the last few weeks, computer distribution dealers like Logtech Trivandrum have been exposed for the unauthorised distribution of pirated software on their machines. The 'sting' operation was conducted by agents of Microsoft Corporation after 'dressing up' as prospective customers. They ordered for systems from the dealers just like regular customers. The unsuspecting technicians installed pirated software, originally from Microsoft itself, including the Operating System and the Word Processing Software (Office). The dealers received notices from the Law and Corporate Affairs wing of Microsoft India a few days later. Faced with the prospect of imprisonment and a fine upto Rs. 2 lakh, the dealers plead guilty. They had to pay Rs. 30, 000 towards costs incurred by Microsoft and were made to sign a MoU against installing such pirated software henceforth.

This does mean a lot to computers users across the city who have been taking use of the lax regulations on the pirated software issue. If this anti-piracy wave in enforced, computer buyers would have to pay sums from 20, 000 to 40, 000 Rs for legal software which used to come bundled with their computers. It's a definite signal for switching towards open source products like Linux or Lindows OSes, Office Suites like Star Office (SOT) or Lotus Smart Suites etc. (Courtesy The Hindu)
